Traditional Location-based services (LBS) can be broadly classified based on whether the objects issuing queries and the query targets are stationary or moving as defined in the following illustration. Most LBS applications are implemented using standard database technology in conjunction with location data acquired either from GPS embedded in cell phones or from wireless carriers. These applications are used where the query target is not moving such as finding the location of the nearest restaurant or store. In this environment, the device issuing the query must request location information and the application then presents query results.

While this works fine when query targets aren‘t moving, this approach is overwhelmed when presented with multiple “moving” sources and targets. These traditional environments cannot effectively handle continous arrival of large volume of location data and processing in real time. If you extend the user requirement further to include “I am going to be there in two hours, who else will be there then?”, it becomes clear that emerging applications like multi-target location sharing, prediction, proximity detection & alerting and other advanced LBS applications cannot be supported effectively using existing technologies. What’s required is a fundamental paradigm shift in database technology.
The Locomatix technology enables Location-Aware Services (LAS)—the next generation of LBS applications.
Locomatix has developed a Location Management and Analysis Platform to meet the demands for LAS deployments. Our platform allows integration of location feeds from a variety of live data sources (such as GPS feeds from mobile phones, live transportation feeds, and mobile coupons), and synthesizes the data to enable rich location-aware notification services. The platform provides integrated privacy mechanisms that allows an individual user to control how and when their location data is used by various services. The platform seamlessly scales to manage high volume feeds and peaks in location data to ensure timely delivery of location-aware notifications to the end users.

We offer a hosted service model to enable and customize specific LAS needs. We also offer an end-to-end client application and deployment model, where we develop a full solution that includes mobile and desktop application development that builds off our hosted platform. We also have options to license our platform.
